Terms of Use

These terms govern your use of skj.law/ and the text-messaging program used by the attorneys at Schaffer Kennedy Johnson. They sit alongside our Privacy Policy and our Disclaimer, which address attorney advertising, legal advice, and the attorney-client relationship.

Using this website

By using skj.law/ you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use the site.

The site is published by Schaffer Kennedy Johnson, 1001 McKinney Street, Suite 1600, Houston, Texas 77002. SKJ is an association of individual attorneys and is not a partnership. Each attorney maintains a separate, independent practice and is solely responsible for the matters that attorney handles.

You may read, print, and share the material here for your own information. You may not scrape it, republish it commercially, or present it as your own. The text, the design, and the SKJ name and marks belong to the attorneys at Schaffer Kennedy Johnson or to the lawyer who wrote the material.

Everything on this site is general information. It is not legal advice and it is not a substitute for advice about your own situation. Using the site, writing to us through it, or calling us does not create an attorney-client relationship. We represent a client only after we have cleared conflicts and both the client and the lawyer have signed a written engagement agreement.

Do not send us confidential or time-sensitive information before an engagement is confirmed in writing. Our Disclaimer sets this out in full.

Text messaging

Program. SMS messaging by the attorneys at Schaffer Kennedy Johnson.

What it is. Some lawyers at Schaffer Kennedy Johnson use SMS to communicate with clients about their legal matters — scheduling, hearing and court dates, reminders, document requests, and questions about an account. Messages go only to someone who has given us a mobile number and agreed to receive them.

How you join. Consent is given to a lawyer or a member of staff, in writing or on a call, and we keep the record of it. We do not add numbers collected any other way, we do not buy or import lists, and we do not text people who have not asked us to.

Message frequency. Message frequency varies based on your case activity.

Cost. Message and data rates may apply. We charge nothing for the messages; your mobile carrier may.

Opting out and getting help. Reply STOP to unsubscribe. Reply HELP for assistance. You can also call (713) 228-8500 or email info@skjm.law. Replying STOP ends the text messages. It does not end the representation, and it does not end a deadline — we will reach you another way.

Carriers. Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages. Do not rely on a text message to meet a deadline or to confirm a court setting.

Privacy. Mobile phone numbers and SMS opt-in consent are never shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. Our Privacy Policy describes what we collect and why.

What a text message is not. SMS is not a secure channel. It is not encrypted end to end, your carrier and ours handle it in transit, and anyone with access to your phone can read it. Phones are also lost, shared, and in some matters seized or monitored. We use text messages for logistics. Tell us if you would rather we did not text you at all, and say so before you send us anything about the substance of your matter.

This site links to material published by others. Those links are a convenience. We do not control, adopt, or endorse what is on a site we do not operate, and we are not responsible for it.

No warranty, and the limits of what we promise

We work to keep this site accurate and available, but we do not warrant that it is either. The law changes, pages go out of date, and services go down. The site is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, neither Schaffer Kennedy Johnson nor any attorney practicing here is liable for any loss arising from use of the site or from reliance on anything published here.

Nothing in this paragraph limits any obligation a lawyer owes a client under the Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct, and nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

Changes

We may revise these terms. The revised version will be posted here with a new date, and material changes will be identified as such. Carrier requirements for text messaging change regularly, and the text-messaging section will change with them.
